Made yourself some beautiful clay bits and now you want them fired? We offer external firing services in our electric kiln for earthenware and stoneware clay or clay bodies that can be fired up to 1250 degrees. 

We also offer a clear glazing service for earthernware or stoneware clear glaze to be applied to bisqued pieces. If your not sure what firing you require, or for more information on kiln dimensions and firing schedules, please get in touch with the studio.

Firing pricing.

  • Bisque firing = $8 per piece

  • Glazing firing = $10 per piece

  • Full 500L Kiln = $250.00

Note: When dropping off pieces, please insure they are all marked with either your name or insignia. Firing times are roughly 10 days between each firing. Full kiln loads require a minimum of 3 weeks.

If applying your own gloss glaze, please ensure no gloss glaze is left on the base of your work, as the work may stick to the kiln shelf and will break coming off. Please note that additional fees incur for any replacement of kiln shelf .

FAQs

  • Most pottery made from potters' clay (rather than air-dried clay) is fired twice. The first time in what's known as a bisque firing which removed all the moisture from the clay body. Pottery is then dipped or painted with glaze and put into a second firing, known as a glaze firing.

  • Firing ranges can be divided into three categories: low-fire, mid-range, and high-fire. This should be specified on the bag of clay itself.

  • We bisque fire cone 06 and glaze fire cone 4 - 6 (depending on the clay body)

  • We offer a clear glazing service at $5.00 per piece.

  • Ceramics can be unpredictable in the final firing. If your work fails in the final firing and is unusable we will give you the full value of this class as a gift voucher to any class at Saltwater. Glazes, tools, decorative techniques, and firing of your peice which will be ready for collection after minimum four weeks.
